Creating Success with Learning During Uncertain Times

Updated: Apr 18

We’ve put together a kind of “roadmap” to help families navigate these difficult and unprecedented times. Scroll down to see the key elements for creating success with at-home schooling.

The Therapeutic Learning Center is offering virtual tutoring and remote services for students impacted by school closures, homeschooling families, and students with learning challenges. We provide support with academics, individualized educational coaching, and structured lessons - all through engaging virtual sessions!

Tips for Navigating the New Normal - and Continuing Your Child’s Learning!

1. Build Consistency

Establishing a routine is crucial to providing a sense of stability during these uncertain times, and to promote your child’s social and emotional well-being.

Set up designated times for “school” time, independent work, exercise, free-choice time, and lunch & break times - and really stick to your routine throughout the week to create a sense of predictability. Invite your child to be a part of the schedule making process, so they have a sense of ownership and commitment to their daily routine.

2. Accountability & Guidance

Make sure your child knows what’s expected of them by going over daily and weekly expectations.

Check independent work at the start of each day, go over what they learned at the end of the day, and make sure they know what their assigned school work is. Older students can get creative with independent work and make their own research projects, video projects, or other independent assignment ideas.

3. Schedule “Unplugged Time”

Being on the computer for a large portion of the day can be a lot. Make sure there is a balance of screen time and “unplugged” academic enrichment time. Students can engage with their creative side through art projects, drawing & painting, or journaling & free-writing.

You can also set them up with reading or exercise & movement activities. Setting aside time for movement and outdoor play (where possible) is important in reducing stress and promoting a sense of calm during these uncertain times.

4. Use Resources & Support

Use any and all resources and community support available to you. It’s more important than ever to draw on support to help your child thrive. Check community forums, social media groups, teacher and educational websites, and get support from your community. Remember to celebrate your wins too!

5. Quality Family Time

Take advantage of this time to come together as a family to work on a home project, get chores done together, and of course - play games together! Set aside time or make it part of the schedule if you need to - so that the whole family can come together and make memories. This will definitely be a time we all remember.

At the Therapeutic Learning Center, we're supporting our students in their continued schooling during these times. We offer one-on-one virtual tutoring sessions, and several remote services to meet students’ varying needs.
